BEIJING: The global number of deaths from the new coronavirus epidemic exceeded 3,000 on Monday after dozens more died in its epicenter in China and cases shot up worldwide, with a second death on US soil.
The virus has now infected more than 89,000 people and has spread to more than 60 countries after first emerging in China at the end of last year.
A second person died in the northwest of the US state of Washington when President Donald Trump, who minimized the risk of a major outbreak, faced criticism about the preparation of his administration.
South Korea, the largest nest of infections outside of China, reported almost 500 new cases on Monday, increasing its total to more than 4,000.
Half of South Korea's cases are linked to a sect whose leader apologized Monday for the spread of the disease. The Seoul city government asked prosecutors to bring murder charges against him.
With the fear of a rising pandemic, the World Health Organization urged all countries to stock up on critical care fans to treat patients with severe symptoms of fatal respiratory disease.
The rapid spread of the coronavirus has generated fears about its impact on the world economy, causing global markets to record their worst losses since the 2008 financial crisis, although Asian markets recovered on Monday.
The Chinese economy has stopped with large areas of the country under quarantine or measures to restrict travel.
Other countries have begun enacting their own drastic containment measures, including banning arrivals from countries affected by viruses, blocking cities, urging citizens to stay home and suspend important events such as football matches and trade shows.
In a clear example of the growing global anxiety, the Louvre, the most visited museum in the world, closed on Sunday after staff refused to work for fear of the virus.
China reported 42 more deaths on Monday, all in the central province of Hubei. It is believed that the virus originated in a market that sold wild animals in the capital of Hubei, Wuhan.
The death toll in China alone rose to 2,912, but it is also increasing abroad, with the second highest number in Iran, with 54. The United States and Australia had their first deaths from the disease over the weekend.American criticism
In the United States, a man in his 70s with underlying conditions died on Saturday, health officials said, while New York reported his first case in a woman who had visited Iran.
It is the second death in both the state of Washington and King County.
The first victim was one of a handful with no known links to global hot zones that contracted the virus, indicating that the pathogen was probably spreading in the communities.
Vice President Mike Pence and health secretary Alex Azar defended the management of the virus by the administration, while seeking to reassure Americans and promised to compensate for deficiencies in virus test kits.
"We could have more sad news, but the American people should know that the risk for the average American remains low," Pence told CNN.
"We will see more cases," said Azar.
"But it is important to remember that, for the vast majority of people who get the new coronavirus, they will experience mild to moderate symptoms."
